About
Carma Bylund, PhD

I am a communication scientist who has developed and led communication skills training workshops for more than 20 years in the U.S. and internationally. These programs have reached thousands of physicians and other healthcare providers around the world. Through my experience, I have come to firmly believe that deliberate practice and feedback are essential for improving physicians’ communication skills.  In the demanding and fast-paced environment of healthcare, effective communication can have a significant impact on patient and family experiences and outcomes.

In addition to my extensive experience teaching communication skills, I am a globally recognized researcher in healthcare communication. My research focuses on developing and implementing communication interventions for clinicians, patients and caregivers. These efforts aim to improve outcomes in critical areas such as cancer clinical trial accrual, HPV vaccination and combating cancer treatment misinformation. My work has been supported by substantial research funding from the National Institutes of Health and organizations like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I have authored 200 peer-reviewed publications, co-edited two books with Oxford University Press on healthcare communication and co-edited the Wiley International Encyclopedia of Health Communication. I am Professor and Associate Chair of Education in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics and the Assistant Director of the Cancer Training and Education Program at the UF Health Cancer Center.
